History of Pune

In the 9th Century Agriculture community named Punnaka existed at the place of today's Pune city. Copper plate inscriptions found which are dated back to 858 and 868 CE shows that this region was ruled by the Rashtrakuta dynasty. Yadavas Devgiri ruled this area for the period from the 9th century to 1327.

Initially, Pune was part of the Ahamadnagar Sultanat, and Maloji Bhosale was granted this area as a Jagir for his services to the Ahamadnagar Sultanat. In the 17th Century, Mughals captured Pune from Ahamadnagar Sultanat. And from here fight for Maratha Supermacy started in Deccan by the grandson of Maloji Bhosale, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji Maharaj was born at Shivneri Fort near Pune. From 1703-1705 this city was occupied by Aurangzeb and changed its name to Murshidabad but this name changed soon after Aurangabds death in 1707. Peshwas controlled the Maratha Empires' affairs from Pune and puna was their capital till 1818 .1st Peshwa Bajirao-1 Started the Construction of Shaniwarwada on the bank of Mutha River which was completed in 1730. Under the Peshwa rule, nearly 250 temples were built in and around the city, including the construction of Roads and Bridges. Including Lakdi Pul and the temple of Parvati. On Parvati Hill. Nanasaheb Peshwa develops Saras Baug, Heera Baug, Parvati Hill, and New Trading and Residential areas like Sadashiv Peth, Narayan Peth, Rasta Peth, and Nana Peth.

During the freedom struggle, puna was a central place for all political and social activities. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Mahatma Jyotiba phuleKeshav Karve, and Pandita Ramabai were the prominent personalities who started their work of political and social upheaval from Pune. Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned in Punas Erawada Jail Several times, and placed under house arrest at Agakhan palace.

Darshan Museum: Multimedia museum on the spiritual teachings of writer/mystic Vaswani, with sound & light shows. 

Pataleshwar Cave Temple: This is a beautiful monolithic creation located in Pune is carved out of a single rock and is a heritage site.

Shaniwar Wada Palace: It is one of the most popular historical buildings in Pune and a must on any sightseeing itinerary. Shaniwarwada is a historical fortification in the city of Pune in Maharashtra, India. Built-in 1732, it was the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire until 1818.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum: Dedicated to his only son Raja, Dr Dinkar Kelkar built this museum. This three-storeyed building stores sculptures dating back to the 14th century. 

Parvati Hills: Parvati temple lies 2100 feet above the mean sea level on a hillock which is commonly known as Parvati hill.

Shinde Chhatri: It is a memorial dedicated to the 18th-century military leader Mahadji Shinde who served as the commander of the Maratha army under the Peshwas.

After the completion of your trip, you will be dropped back at your hotel/residence in Pune city limits.
