Alibaug was built in the 17th century under the supervision of Shivaji Maharaj. In 1852 it was declared 'Taluka'. In Alibaug, a place named Beni has been the residence of Israeli Jews for many decades now. The Kolaba Fort is a testimony to the fact that the Maratha Empire ruled this part of India. This fort, which is currently in disrepair, can be seen clearly from the coast of Alibaug. During the full tide this fort looks simply mesmerizing. Another fort is Khandari fort which is about 300 years old. This fort built in the Peshwa dynasty and was handed over to the British during the British rule. Kankeshwar Temple and Someshwar Temple are the two prestigious temples that fill the reverence in the minds of pilgrims coming here. These two splendid temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva. This small town is today a business center, while the local people live in farms and huts. Also known as 'Goa of Maharashtra,' Alibaug is surrounded by water from three sides and the beautiful Alibaug beach on the other. With lots of coconut and betel trees all around the banks of the coast, the entire area looks like a tropical beach. The weather here is very pleasant and the coast looks absolutely untouched.
